چکیده

Physical prototyping is an important part in research and development of tangible user interfaces (TUIs). On the way from the idea to a working prototype, hardware prototypes usually have to be crafted repeatedly in numerous iterations. However, this can be very timeand cost-intensive when non-standard, expensive hardware components are part of the design. This brings us to think about digital prototypes that exhibit the same functionality as a physical TUI, but reduce the amount of resources that have to be spent. For that reason, we present a middleware-based process that allows developing and testing fully functional implementations of a tangible user interface as a digital device in a 3D virtual environment.

Using ARToolKit Markers to Build Tangible Prototypes and Simulate Other Technologies

Quick prototyping of tangible user interfaces is currently hampered by availability of toolkits and the double challenge of tinkering with software and hardware. While software may be downloaded, hardware cannot. As a work-around for a class on experimental prototyping of tangible appliances we utilized the ARToolKit that tracks optical markers. By creatively adapting it, our students quickly d...

Rapidly Prototyping Marker Based Tangible User Interfaces

Tangible user interfaces (TUIs) can create engaging and useful interactive systems. However, along with the power of these interfaces comes challenges; they are often so specialized and novel that building a TUI system involves working at a low level with custom hardware and software. As a result the community of people that are capable of creating TUIs is limited. With this project we aim to m...

Museomix: lessons learned from an open creative hackathon in museums

In the past decades, museums have become places that do not only conserve and store artefacts, but also provide visitors with education and entertainment. They are now challenged to become open, collaborative and creative spaces. In this paper we describe a participative event, involving both visitors and museum actors during a threeday hackathon in order to create digital artefacts for museums...

Tuimod —modular Objects for Tangible User Interfaces

This paper describes the design and construction of TUImod, a modular system of basic elements generated by rapid-prototyping techniques that can be combined in various ways into human distinguishable and computer trackable physical objects with specific physical properties. The described system is used in our tangible desk environment for data exploration applications.
